Catalyst Radio is a weekly radio show with hosts Linda Gellasch and Denise Cheng that looks at the behind-the-scenes of Rapidian reporting as well as grassroots and nonprofit efforts around the community. The show comprises a media analysis and developments portion, interview segment and calendar of events. You can catch it on air at noon every Friday on WYCE 88.1 FM or streaming on the Grand Rapids Community Media Center Website.

Darin Estep of The Grand Rapids Press joins The Rapidian's Denise Cheng to recap the processes our two organizations shared in collaborating on winter photo projects. The Press is holding a winter photo caption competition while The Rapidian is soliciting our community for photos that capture what we like about West Michigan Winters. Hear the different inspirations and dead ends we came across in the process of putting together a project that is often referred to as "crowdsourcing."

Looking forward and looking back: Years in review and predictions
Several different media organizations have published a recap of 2010 and predictions for 2011. Among three we've highlighted are a blog analysis of predictions for 2011 from 1931 in The New York Times and how they match up to reality. Twitter has put together a review of the ten most powerful tweets of 2010 that run the gamut from environmentalism to pop culture to Twitter as a life-saving technology. Facebook also has compiled its list of trends, complete with graphs, that showed the most cited topics by users of the social network.

Julian Assange out on bail, WikiLeaks fans wage backlash
Julian Assange, often credited as the founder of WikiLeaks, was arrested earlier this month because WikiLeaks had published cables from US diplomats that embarrassed the federal government internationally. Assange is out on bail after being taken in for charges having to do with sexual allegations. The government asked payment facilitation services such as PayPal and Mastercard to shut down services to WikiLeaks, a nonprofit. Since then, cooperating companies have faced backlash as hackers broke into their system in support of Assange. Michigan film director Michael Moore and many others put up money for Assange's bail, which was $316,000.

eBooks to be included in best sellers list
Although only about 7% of the adult population consume books digitally, The New York Times has decided to start publishing ebooks in the best-sellers list.

High court ruling in UK could precipitate copyrighted headlines
A recent ruling has determined that publishers should be paid when a for-profit aggregator uses their web content. This could extend from excerpts of the text itself to headlines and hyperlinks.

Circle Theatre is holding fundraising performances to go toward scholarship funds at Grand Rapids Community College. Performances include Santaland Diaries and a holiday cabaret.

[TECHNOLOGY] Computer literacy classes at Grand Rapids Public Library
Word Processing II & Spreadsheets on Dec. 18 | Google Essentials on Dec. 21
Grand Rapids Public Library (111 Library NE)
The library offers free adult education classes that range in level from basic computing to effective use of social media. Coming up tomorrow and later this week are classes on wordprocessing, spreadsheets and Google essentials.
GRPL Anime Club: Spice and Wolf, Strawberry Marshmallow
6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 20 at Grand Rapids Public Library (111 Library NE)
Ages 11-18
The GRPL Anime Club meets once a month for two hours to screen Japanese animation films, complete with refreshments. This month, the club will be screening episode 1 of Spice and Wolf, and episode 1, 2, and 4 of Strawberry Marshmallow.

11th Annual WYCE Bubble Bash

$25 admission
This annual fundraiser for WYCE is hosted by The Gilmore Collection and features 12 different wines and bubblies from around the world along with various munchies. There will be prize raffles throughout the night.

WYCE 88.1 FM is a community radio station that operates out of Grand Rapids Community Media Center. It is a 10,000 watt radio station that serves up music shows and community information from Grand Rapids to the lake shore.
