The Grand Rapids Planning Commission voted today to approve a special land use permit for the Pyramid Scheme, a proposed neighborhood bar and music venue at 68 Commerce Ave SW in downtown Grand Rapids. Behind the scheme are Jeff and Tami VandenBerg, sibling co-owners of the Meanwhile Bar, and Mark Sellers, owner of HopCat, Stella's, and the Viceroy. The permit will also cover a proposed brewpub at 62 Commerce, which will be operated by Sellers. The VandenBergs will operate the Pyramid Scheme.
This was the last of the city approvals needed for the project, which has been underway since late 2009. An incentive liquor license was awarded yesterday by the Downtown Development Authority, and the Historical Commission gave their blessing to the renovation and restoration of the building on July 7. According to Jeff VandenBerg, the Pyramid Scheme will consist of a small pub-style bar open 7 days a week, and a 400 capacity music venue which will host mid-level national touring bands as well as local acts.
The Commission voted unanimously to approve the venture. According to the Vandenbergs, doors are expected to open next spring.
