Caring For You, Caring For Me: What It Means to Be a Caregiver

Thursday, May 28, 2015

ComForCare Senior Services of Grand Rapids will present a free educational program for family and professional caregivers called Caring for You, Caring for Me. The program, which will be held in two-hour sessions over the course of five weeks, was developed by the Rosalynn Carter Institute of Caregiving to help caregivers learn, find resources, build coping skills and share ideas.

According to “Caregiving in the U.S. 2009,” a report from the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, more than 65 million people, 29 percent of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year. Alicia Junghans, owner of ComForCare Senior Services of Grand Rapids, decided to host the Caring for You, Caring for Me program to help local caregivers in the Grand Rapids area. “I work with family and professional caregivers every day,” Junghans said. “I understand how difficult it can be. My hope is that this program can help people in our community find resources and build the support network they need.”

Junghans, who is a licensed nursing home administrator and has a bachelor’s degree in gerontology, will facilitate the program. The program will feature several guest speakers, including psychologist GraceAnn Robertson, Ph.D., and a representative from the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan.

Caring for You, Caring for Me will be held at Covenant Village of the Great Lakes: 2510 Lake Michigan Drive, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. Class size is limited. Please register early at 616-735-6069.
