Fire Lieutenant David Pyle, a 17 year Grand Rapids Fire Department veteran, was
injured while fighting a fire at 142 Deloney SW on Sunday evening. He was treated at
Spectrum Downtown and released shortly after 12:00 AM this morning. He suffered
non-life threatening injuries and will be off duty for approximately one week.
While performing a fire attack, flames in a doorway necessitated Pyle to move quickly
away from the doorway. This action caused him to lose his footing and he fell down
approximately 20 steps and struck a cement landing. He was treated on scene by other
firefighters and transported by American Medical Response to the hospital.
Deputy Chief Jerry Salatka stated “These are the dangers that firefighters face on a
daily basis, one wrong step or being in the wrong place at the wrong time is the
difference between going home healthy or going to the hospital. We are happy that the
injuries were not more severe.”
