Pitch:

January 16, 2012 will mark the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. This milestone is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King's legacy through service and each year, people from across the country come together on this day to volunteer in their neighborhoods. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a beloved community.

To help communities make the most of their Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service project, the Michigan Community Service Commission has teamed up with members of the ConnectMichigan Alliance to provide mini-grants of $250- $850 for 29 different service projects. Although small amounts, these grants will support critical components of the different projects and allow organizations to afford the supplies necessary to make a difference in their communities.

Two Grand Rapids Organizations received one of the mini-grants for the MLK Day 2012 :

Heart of West Michigan United Way Next Generation

$850

On Monday, January 16, multiple projects will engage young volunteers as they renovate a high school library.

West Michigan American Red Cross

$850

Volunteers will teach local families about disaster preparedness on Monday, January 16, and participate in a service project for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Contact these local organizations for details regarding their own plans.
