GROW AWARDED “REMARKABLE WOMEN AWARD” FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT, TENACITY AND INNOVATION
Local Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Celebrates Female Entrepreneurs
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – To culminate Women’s History Month, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) held their first RemArKAble Women Banquet on March 25 to celebrate women with entrepreneurial spirit, tenacity, and innovation. Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women (GROW) was honored and received a RemArKAble Women Award, alongside Jessica Ann Tyson (Events by Jessica Ann), Alice Kennedy (KMR Diversity Theatre), Dr. Patricia Pulliam (The Grand Rapids Times), and Nicolle Wills (JNicolle Salon Boutique & Spa).
AKA was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. The 260,000 member organization seeks to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women. They do this by focusing on their six initiatives, one of which is their Economic Security Initiative. This effort supports the empowerment of female owned businesses. (http://www.aka1908.com)
GROW is a Women’s Business Center that focuses on economic development through small business ownership and expansion. In 2010, GROW helped launch 57 business and created 124 new jobs in West Michigan. Over 1100 attendees received entrepreneurial training. GROW offers programs and resources to assist those starting and strengthening their small businesses. Programs include training, workshops, networking events, mentoring, free business counseling, micro lending, and Individual Development Accounts. The Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs is a division of GROW.
Founded in 1989 as a non-profit economic development organization, Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women (GROW)provides all promising entrepreneurs, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, gender, age or education, with opportunities to develop the skills and acquire the knowledge they need to achieve economic independence through self-employment, primarily in the form of small business startups and expansion of small business.
