The Salvation Army and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
collaborate and celebrate National Doughnut Day.

The Salvation Army doughnut give-away to feature Home for Veterans and
other organizations who are “doing the most good” in the local community.

Grand Rapids, MI May 15, 2012 – The Salvation Army is celebrating the 75th annual National Doughnut Day on Friday, June 1 by giving away 2,000 free doughnuts.  The Salvation Army is widely credited with popularizing the doughnut in the United States by feeding American soldiers the tasty confection during World War I.

National Doughnut Day was first celebrated in Chicago in 1938 to help the needy during the Great Depression and commemorate the work of The Salvation Army “doughnut lassies” who served soldiers during the War. The first Friday in June each year marks an important date in American food history and raises awareness for the critical services that The Salvation Army provides to those in need each day.

The Salvation Army and numerous volunteers will be distributing free doughnuts to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Doughnut Day. In addition, The Salvation Army is asking the public to nominate local organizations that are “doing the most good” in Grand Rapids to be surprise recipients of a free dozen doughnuts on Doughnut Day. Doughnut distribution will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Nominations begin immediately and will conclude on May 28. To volunteer for either event or to nominate an organization, please visit tag.sakentcounty.org or contact Angela DeVries at 616.459.3433 or via email at [email protected]

“In Kent County, over ten thousand individuals received emergency food assistance last year – so there’s no better way to highlight our work than by celebrating a great American food,” said Captain Bob Mueller, Kent County Coordinator. “While everyone enjoys a doughnut during Doughnut Day, we hope they’ll also think about giving back to those less fortunate,” Captain Mueller added.

Locally, The Salvation Army provides vital human services to those in housing crisis, assistance with utility and other critical expenses, care and support for young teen parents, rehabilitation for those struggling with addictions, recreational and character building programs for youth and adults along with a variety of programs offered to Kent County residents every day.

Those who wish may support National Doughnut Day and other local initiatives by sending financial gifts directly to The Salvation Army, 1215 Fulton Street East, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503-3849 or by calling 616.459.3433. For more information, please visit our website atsakentcounty.org
