March Madness is right around the corner. While many are cheering for their favorite teams, Bethany Christian Services is building one! Bethany's Join the Team challenge is a chance for community members to get involved and possibly WIN big. Making a lasting difference and winning prizes may not be the norm but their mentoring program has found a way to do both.
When you apply to become a mentor each applicant will be entered into a chance to WIN the grand prize package that includes new tools, gift cards, and so much more. Mentoring is an ongoing one to one relationship with a trusted volunteer (mentor) and a child or teenager (mentee) as a role model for only 4 hours a month to help a young person unlock his or her unique qualities and potential.
Young men in the mentoring program wait three times as long to be match with a mentor because of the shortage of male applicants. There are significant high school dropout rates as high as 50 percent in some school districts in the country for youth lacking a male presence in their life. With mentoring, those percentages change to 52 percent of the mentored youth are less likely to skip school and 46 percent are less likely to begin using illegal drugs.
