Women Who Care of Kent County (WWCKC) announce their second award to a Kent County non-profit group. The group raised over $ 9000 in less than one hour at a quarterly meeting.
On Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 2 pm, the group will present their donation to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA, http://www.casakentco.org/), a local volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens to become appointed members of the Kent County court system. The volunteers act on behalf of abused or neglected children as they pass through the family court system.
Members of the WWCKC Steering Committee will be in attendance at the court briefing at 2:00 pm, and in a short meeting with the presiding Judge after the hearing. The donation ceremony will follow.
Women Who Care of Kent County is a part of a national, informal network of women who raise money for local non-profit groups. Women Who Care was started in November of 2006 by Karen Dunigan of Jackson, MI, as a simple way to raise money efficiently and quickly for local charities/non-profits/worthy causes. The initial group of 100 women, at their first one-hour meeting, each wrote a check for $100 directly to the charity, raising $10,000 to buy 300 new baby cribs for an organization in their city. Since then, they have grown to over 200 members and chapters are forming all over the country (from http://www.100womenlivingstoncounty.org/history.html)
The Kent County group has raised close to $ 15,000 during their first two meetings. The first award was given to the Grand Rapids Children’s Assessment Center in June, 2013. The next meeting is scheduled for December 5, 2014. Any woman is welcome to join, but a full year commitment to the group’s efforts is required. You can find more information about joining WWCKC on facebook at Women Who Care of Kent County.
