Local Leaders Speak to Environmental & Economic Benefits of Clean Cars

Grand Rapids, Michigan –  Representatives from Environment Michigan, Blue Green Alliance, West Michigan Environmental Action Coalition (WMEAC), and Consumers Energy will gather in Calder Plaza on Thursday to announce economic and fuels savings for Michigan from the administration’s new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.  The findings are from an analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Natural Resources Defense Council, which outlines the reduction in oil usage and the gasoline savings for Michigan residents that will come if the average car meets the equivalent of a 54.5 miles per gallon standard—the standard the Obama administration is calling for vehicles to meet by 2025. The analysis features a state-by-state breakdown on total pocketbook savings at the gas pump, and an average savings figure per household.

This event will be held just days before the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation hold a public hearing in Detroit on January 17—one of only three public hearings being held nationally—to gauge public opinion on the Obama administration’s proposed new clean car standards for vehicles in model years 2017-2025.
