Founder Mary K Hoodhood and volunteer Kyle Barnhardt also named finalists in two other categories

June 1, 2010, Grand Rapids, Mich.—Kids’ Food Basket, a non-profit organization that attacks childhood hunger in West Michigan, is proud to announce that it is represented in three of the seven categories recognized by the Governor’s Service Awards. The awards honor non-profit organizations and the efforts of their volunteer supporters statewide.

As an organization, Kids’ Food Basket has been named one of five finalists statewide for the Governor’s Service Award in the category of Outstanding Volunteer Program. Two Kids’ Food Basket advocates have also been named in other categories:

* Kids’ Food Basket founder Mary K Hoodhood is one of five finalists statewide for the Governor George Romney Lifetime Achievement Award.
* Kids’ Food Basket Youth Advisory Board Member Kyle Barnhardt has been named a finalist for the Governor’s Youth Volunteer of the Year Award.

“This is a huge honor for us and two of our biggest supporters. Mary K and Kyle have worked tirelessly to make Kids’ Food Basket a successful organization that our community loves and supports,” said Bridget Clark Whitney, executive director of Kids’ Food Basket. “Being recognized as an organization is also an incredible honor. It is recognition that has been earned by hundreds of volunteers who dedicate themselves to attacking childhood hunger every day, one sack supper at a time.”

Over 130 nominations were received for the 2010 awards, with 35 finalists being selected in the seven categories. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on June 24, 2010 in Detroit, Mich. at the Gem Theatre.

Kids’ Food Basket attacks childhood hunger by providing nutritious sack suppers to over 2,600 children in schools throughout Greater Grand Rapids. Each sack supper provides approximately 1,000 calories and represents five food groups. Learn more at www.kidsfoodbasket.org.
