A lost girl, a devious wolf, and a path that leads in the wrong direction…who will save Red?

HIS Dance Ensemble premieres RED, a contemporary ballet based on the classic tale “Little Red Riding Hood.” Artistic Directors Tassia Johnson and Hannah Sullivan, weave spiritual allegory into this well-loved story to create a fresh, new theatrical experience. RED debuts March 14 at 3 & 7 pm and March 15 at 3 pm 2015.  All performances are held at DeVos Center for Arts & Worship at Grand Rapids Christian High School, 2300 Plymouth Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI  49506. Tickets may be purchased online at www.hisdance.org.

As the character Red travels into the woods to fulfill her mother's request, she becomes quickly distracted by the beauty surrounding her. The Wolf, played by former Dance Theatre of Harlem dancer, Patrick Johnson, entices Red to lose her way. Will the Huntsman, played by guest artist Charlie Clark, current GVSU student, arrive in time?  "We want this story to engage audiences because it’s familiar and then surprise them as we elaborate on untold parts of this well known fairy tale. We aim to draw the hearts of each person into a world filled with despair and a conclusion of redemption and hope" Hannah Sullivan explains.

Tassia Johnson and Hannah Sullivan teach dance at HIS Dance Academy and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Tassia was a soloist with the acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem for twelve years and toured the world performing original works by many notable choreographers. Hannah performs with and choreographs for Dance in the Annex (DITA), including the ArtPrize 2014 Juror’s Time-Based Award winning “respirador (breather)”, directors Amy & Erin Wilson. Their unique experiences combine to create a ballet with strong technique and creative choreography.

The Grand Plie` sponsors for RED are: Beacon Hill at Eastgate, Kent Concrete, The Melting Pot & WJQ 99.3.  The Ballet will open with an original composition performed by local musician Jeremy Verwys.

HIS Ensemble is the performance division of HIS Dance. HIS Dance Academy offers a variety of dance classes for children ages 3 through adult. Pre-professional training in ballet and recreational dance is taught in combination with developing Christian character and reaching the Grand Rapids community for Christ.
