About: Freelance Design Creative, Photographer, Local Historian Jim is a sixth-generation Grand Rapidian who’s Powers family began arriving in 1847, following uncle John Ball from Lansingburgh, New York. He has researched the Powers and Ball families, their businesses and involvement in early Grand Rapids for more than 30 years. He is researching an extensive project on Powers' Theatre, it being at the heart of Grand Rapids entertainment for over a hundred years 1873–1979. His latest latest endeavor is researching, documenting and mapping the history of the West Side Water Power Canal and its historic contribution at the dawn of Hydroelectric Power. He is on The Board of Trustees for Grand Rapids Historical Society since 2013.
