City High-Middle School Ranked Among Top Schools in America

U.S. News & World Report Ranks City High #7 in Michigan
For the fourth consecutive year, City High-Middle Schools has been ranked among the top high schools in America by U.S. News & World Report. The report ranks City High-Middle School among the top 10 Michigan High Schools, coming in at #7; #53 among the nation’s Magnet schools, and #519 in the nation earning them a Silver Award.
However, City High leaders and parents are quick to note that they expect more and better, especially once all City High students are taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma exams in the next few years.
If the 100 percent participation rate in City’s International Baccalaureate Programme was factored into this year’s calculations, City would be on the heels of the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills for the honor of the top school in Michigan,” said Jon Waalkes, City High parent whose wife Kimberly heads up the City High PTSA.
City High-Middle was the first school in the area to offer the coveted International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programme. At the Grand Rapids Board of Education meeting last night, leaders from the Grand Rapids Symphony, Ferris State University’s Kendall College, and retired City High Principal Dale Hovenkamp announced a feasibility study that is looking into an IB elementary program with an arts focus.
“GRPS is proud to offer students and parents the top performing school choice in all of West Michigan,” said Teresa Neal, interim Superintendent. “City High-Middle School exemplifies the quality, rigor, and expectations we hold for all our schools.”
The U.S. News & World Report rankings were released today as part of the fourth edition of the Best High Schools rankings. This year’s rankings included more than 22,000 additional high schools than the previous year.
In 2009, Grand Rapids Montessori High School also made the list of Best High Schools, something the school is aiming to reclaim with the renewed focus on the Montessori secondary program.
