Writing WOTS on the week of artprize is sort of like trying to make a ripple in the ocean during a tsunami.
With that being said there simply is NO reason for not getting out into the city this weekend and enjoying the excitement, sweet spontaneous events and action, action everywhere!

For this week you will have to excuse me if I miss your event… there may just be too, too, too many. Here is a selection of some of those that caught my attention….

Word on the Street for September 23rd 2010~

Weekend:
Prospecto, if you haven’t heard about it you don’t like music. All weekend, all over the city. All sorts of rad local and national bands. More great stuff then you can even wrap your brain around…..If you are looking for music just go here: http://www.prospectogr.com/index.php

All weekend long you can visit the Chaotic Growth Mural Project Outside Stella's Lounge. There are going to be 4 badd-assssss graffiti dudes throwing down on the wall at 44 Ionia, as well as, art vendors, Dj Spydre Murphy, rad lunch box specials from Stellas and special dusk performances nightly! They have a super cool Iphone app that you can download at www.chaoticgrowth.com

I think it is incredibly brave to enter performance based work into Artprize. So En La Profundidad: Into The Deep, is taking place all weekend long at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA)
Over the weekend there are performances on Friday at 7,8 and 9 Sunday at 2,4,6 and 8 and Sunday at 1,3 and 5pm.

THURSDAY
The GR Free School has been offering a great selection of classes and info meetings. This week they are hosting an intro to Hula-Hooping from 7–8pm at Wilcox Park. This is an all ages hip grooving wiggle waggle of a time. The Symphony is launching a new series, Thursdays@7. They will have shorter format performances and audience interaction with an opportunity for questions. The performance is the world-premiere of a newly commissioned work by  Andrew Norman “inspired by the spirit of ArtPrize” Tickets on sale through the Box office

FRIDAY
Ride a bike!?  Want to meet other riders and make the city a safer place to ride? Mount up and ride Critical Mass from 5:30–7pm Riders meet at Veteran's Memorial Park. Cruise the city, raise bike awareness and have a good ole’ ride.

Cost: Free!

Explore Germanic cultural wonders ! Say “Hallo, Wie geht's” to neighbors and friends…. Dress your dog in lederhosen!  In other words this weekend is Oktoberfest at John Ball Park. In true festival style there is art, good music and dancing. The proceeds go towards the very worthy Kids Food Basket and the event is free!  Friday and Satuday.  From noon till 11pm.

Here is a little Artpize action that is going to give you goosebumps the Ice Gurus are going to do a demo at the GVSU Downtown campus beginning at 4pm on Friday afternoon.

SATURDAY!
Saturday afternoon join up with the Bloom Collective for an ArtPrize from 3-5pm. Discussion about the “darker side of Artprize” including its capitalists overtones and its effect on the creative class. vegan potluck options please.  Want to find out more? http://thebloomcollective.org/

‘Tiz the season for bruising and crusin! Get ready to Ride. Roller Derby style. RiverTown Sports is hosting a showdown between the Meanwhile Warriors and Team Saz-A-Racks they are going to get wily on the track and throw down until there is a champion team!  Go GIRLS!  Tickets and info at http://grandraggidyrollergirls.com/

SUNDAY
The Fulton Street Artisain’s Market is having their last market of the year on Sunday! Time to get those holiday presents stowed away for the winter months!  Check out vendors from 11 to 3!

Sunday Soup is back! This month they are hosting speaker Bryce Dwyer of InCUBATE Sunday, from 6-8:30. $5 gets you Soup and a vote, then you get to listen to vaious community members present their ideas and vote on whom should get the loot! (usually it is around $200.00!)  If you are interested in finding out more about how to apply to be in the running for the funds check out the DAAC website at www.thedaac.org
