By: Holly Bechiri (Holly) on August 24th, 2011 at 2:55 pm Our family tends to do a lot of "relational tithe," meaning rather than give to organizations we will often assist on an individual basis. More often now, though, we find ourselves supporting arts organizations, international development organizations, and organizations that empower others (to grow their own food, to use their voices to speak up, to create justice, to end discrimination) rather than give handouts. I suppose our intent is to improve impoverished lives (whether they be poor in basic physical needs or in the need for beauty and literacy and all those other supposedly intangible things that make life worth living and not just surviving). We don't ever want to do it in a a way that contributes to a system of continuing a person's inability to provide for themselves. "Disaster relief reactions only in disaster situations, and even then, working towards development" guides our choices.
