Financial scams against senior adults have become so common that they’re now considered the “crime of the 21st century.” As part of its monthly Healthy U lecture series, Covenant Village of the Great Lakes, a faith-based, not-for-profit continuing care retirement community, will present “Keeping Safe from Technology Fraud” on Monday, June 15 at 10 a.m. Covenant Village is located at 2510 Lake Michigan Dr. N.W., Grand Rapids, Mich. 49504.

During the presentation, Detective Marcus T. Glover from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department will educate seniors about the latest scams, focusing specifically on technology, and provide tips to help keep seniors from becoming victims. He’s been in law enforcement for more than 15 years and works in the Investigative Division.
“Senior adults are vulnerable targets for scammers,” said Jana Broughton, executive director at Covenant Village of the Great Lakes. “We want to educate our residents and local seniors about the types of scams out there so they can better protect themselves and their finances.
The National Council on Aging lists 10 common scams that target seniors. They are: health insurance fraud, counterfeit prescription drugs, funeral and cemetery scams, fraudulent anti-aging products, telemarketing, Internet fraud, investment schemes, mortgage scams, sweepstakes/lottery scams and the grandparent scam.
