Hiromi Ito — bilingual poetry reading & conversation

Thursday, September 25, 2014

10am to noon

Mary Idema Pew Library — GVSU Allendale

1 campus drive
allendale MI 49401

Ito is one of the foremost writers of contemporary Japan, a radical iconoclast known for her bold explorations of the feminine body, sexuality, and motherhood. Since moving to California in 1997, she has written poetry and novels about her experiences as a Japanese transplant and the implications of linguistic isolation for self-expression and identity. During this reading and conversation, Ito will reflect on her provocative life and her groundbreaking work. She will also be joined by her translator, Dr. Jeffrey Angles from Western Michigan University, in order to celebrate and read from from their newest publication together, the long narrative poem Wild Grass on the Riverbank (newly published by Action Books in September 2014). More of Ito’s work is available in Killing Kanoko, also translated by Angles (Action Books, 2009).
