In this week’s segment of GRTV’s NPO Showcase, 3:11 Youth Housing’s Kayla Morgan and Lauren VanKeulen discuss their work to develop safe, affordable housing for youth experiencing homelessness, the impact of homelessness on individuals and our society, and how the community can support these efforts as 3:11 continues to increase their capacity.
3:11 Youth Housing believes in housing first, positive youth development, and harm reduction approaches. After youth are in stable housing, 3:11 works with them to develop goals that make sense for their life circumstances. 3:11 House Mentors build positive relationships with youth by hosting weekly, family-style meals, teaching life skills, and connecting youth with other services as needed.
“We believe that the mentoring piece is really important because it provides our youth with a sense of family, and a sense of home,” Morgan said. “It’s a time where we can be close together and just be there to have that extra support when you are 18 and ready to explore the world and figure out what you want to do with your life.”
