Mocha Moms Inc. is a support group in Grand Rapids that meets once a month at the Kentwood Library. Mocha Moms is a national organization with over 100 chapters across the country. The mission of Mocha Moms is to support mothers of color who have chosen not to work full-time outside of their home and instead devote more time to their families and communities. A chapter in Grand Rapids began in 2011 by a group of women who believed in the mission and thought the area could benefit greatly from the organization. One of them was Matilda Weddle, Co-President of Mocha Moms of Greater Grand Rapids.

“Anyone who supports the mission is welcome to join,” Weddle says. “As a result, we have members who work full time, part time or not at all outside of the home. In addition, we have dads and members who are not of color."

The group is intended to encourage the decisions made by the mothers in the group and to provide information on ways they can be the most important influence on their children.

Along with hosting monthly support group meetings, they host Monthly Moms Night Out, family events and community service projects.

"We engage in a broad range of community service projects," says Weddle. "They include hosting events, volunteering and collecting items for local organizations."

“Currently, our chapter is small,” Weddle says. “However, we welcome new members year round.”

An information session/meet and greet will be held on Saturday, March 22 for anyone that would like to learn more about Mocha Moms, Inc. and to meet some of the members. It will take place at at Schuler Books & Music (2260 28th Street SE) at 10:30 a.m. Anyone interested can reserve a spot or receive additional information through email.
