Mitten Brewing Company on Leonard Street is expanding its operation to include a new production facility and significantly more seating.

Located at 527 Leonard in an historic former fire station, the West Side's only brewery is remodeling the second floor to add 77 seats with a total capacity at 85. It is slightly larger that the downstairs which seats 68.

The upstairs will be accessible through the main entrance off of Leonard and contain a second bar and cooler. The back of the bar was designed to include four of the remaining original fireman's lockers into the decor. The south end of the hall will see the fireman's pole extended to the ceiling. Off of the main hall is a smaller separate room that will be designated for large group dining or meetings and will include a television and laptop connections.

The building aesthetic will remain the same upstairs; exposed brick and wood beams. A firehouse theme will compliment the space and add variety to the historic baseball theme happening downstairs.

A new two story deck that wraps around from the south end to the east side has been installed that will seat 44 total.

A new 20 barrel brew house that includes three additional 20 barrel fermenters will be installed across Leonard Street raising the total capacity to 1,500 barrels annually. Mitten Brewing currently operates a three barrel system capable of producing up 600 barrels annually.

With more production capacity comes a greater assortment of beers.

"Taking Country Strong and Triple Crown Brown - our flagships- across the road to the 20 barrel will free up fermenters over here which will allow for more experimentation with the brewers to do other varieties of beers," says co-owner Max Trierweiler.

Mitten Brewing Company opened in November of 2012 in the historic Engine House No. 9. It features six beers on tap and an appetizer and pizza menu. The renovation is scheduled to be completed and open for business before the end of the month.
