On Saturday, May 24 at 1:30 local citizens concerned about GMO food growing issues can join protesters at Ah-Nab-Awan Park to march against Monsanto. Organization will take place at 1:30 p.m. and the march will begin promptly at 2 p.m., ending at Heartside Park.

March 24 is a global day of protest against the the agricultural company Monsanto. People from around the world will be marching in solidarity against the agrobusiness's ethical practices. This will be the third annual Grand Rapids participation.

"As Vice President and the Grand Rapids Chapter leader, I will be marching against Monsanto for food freedom and labeling,"  says Tonya Hawley.

The march is being coordinated by NoGMO4Michigan Grand Rapids chapter. NoGMO4Micighan is an organization that seeks to educate and inform Michigan residents about the food they consume. It is the group's contention that the practice of genetically modifying organisms puts human health at risk. The group holds monthly educational meetings from January through June and from September through December.

My main grievance with Monsanto is the companies lack of respect for mankind and our Earth.  Because of the companies wealth they are allowed to continue to destroy the health and wellbeing of our nation and environment.  90% of GMO crops are herbicide tolerant to glyphosate and the other 10% are engineered to include Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin in every cell of the plant.  The latter is registered with the EPA as a pesticide!!  So, a registered pesticide is also safe to consume as food??  Herbicide tolerant means that the crop can withstand repeated applications of RoundUp (glyphosate) and not die.  The repeated applications are causing numerous issues ecologically such as super bugs, super weeds, run-off into our water systems poisoning all subject to it.  It’s hard to avoid!  A recent peer reviewed study published in the journal Entropy stated “Glyphosate may in fact be the most biologically disruptive chemical in our environment”.

So even if you look at the bioscience and believe their claims that it’s safe, use your common sense.   Do you want to be eating pesticides/chemicals, feeding them to your loved ones, and participating in this destruction of our environment?  There are no long-term safety studies on the safety of GMOs.  If you think the FDA is looking out for your best interest, think again!  FDA says it is up to Monsanto to prove safety and Monsanto says, we are a for profit business it’s up to the FDA to prove safety – classic case of neither side taking responsibility! In which case, GMO regulations are based on “substantial equivalence” and generally regarded as safe (GRAS).  You are a science experiment for the federal government.  You have the power to change that!  Educate yourself, buy local, buy organic, support sustainable farms and companies.   VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLAR (or Fork as we like to say within our organization, NoGMO4Michigan)!!!

Our nation’s health has been a steady decline for the past 20 years, is it coincidence that GMO crops came into play about the same time?   Dr. Nancy Swanson discovered the correlation and plotted GMO data from USDA and statistics from the CDC, the correlation of GMOs to disease is astonishing.  She reported it in the Health Swanson Report.

NoGMO4Michigan is a state-wide educational 501c3 non-profit.  The Grand Rapids Chapter is very active, with monthly educational meetings Jan – June and Sept –Dec.  Volunteers and Leaders are needed!  We provide the tools to start your real food journey.  As Vice President and the Grand Rapids Chapter Leader, I will be marching against Monsanto for food freedom and labeling.  We deserve the right to farm, the right to save seed, the right to live in a world free from cross contamination of GMO crop and pesticide/herbicides, the right to TRUTH in LABELING, the right to know and TRACK health issues that could be related to GMO toxins, the right to healthy babies and families…pets and animals, THE RIGHT TO KNOW!!!!
