The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) will host a lively and free panel discussion on Thursday, July 21, 2016 about the impact of color on design. UICA has invited experts from diverse design backgrounds from across the region to discuss the power of color in their own work and the ways in which color trends inform their overall vision, product, and messaging.

Panelists include; Kathryn Chaplow the Principal and Interior Designer at Kathryn Chaplow LLC-Interior Design, John O’Neill the Principal and Creative Director at Conduit Studio, Kathryn Shah the Vice President of Marketing at X-Rite Pantone, and Patrick Plank the Creative Director at Leigh's. Guests are encouraged to join the conversation and can enjoy free admission, appetizers, beer and wine, and a look at UICA’s current exhibition, Color of the Year presented by X-Rite Pantone, on view until July 31, 2016.

Color of the Year highlights the intersection between contemporary art and design, and the panel discussion is a fantastic complement to an exhibition that highlights local, regional, and national artists who are using the color of the year as inspiration for their work. We’re excited to bring design experts together to talk about the impact of color on design and how they approach color trends in their own work and we look forward to the experiences that our creative community will share. “ shared Katie Zychowski, UICA’s Marketing and Communications Coordinator.’

Exhibition highlights include a large-scale kinetic installation by Susie Ganch whose work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and who has received recognition in numerous fine-art publications and journals. Ganch has created an original site-responsive sculpture for UICA’s Color of the Year exhibition.

Nobuho Nagasawa, a NYC based artist whose work ranges from site-specific projects to installations and public art, has created an interactive installation that is activated by guest interplay. Nagasawa has included a new iteration of her installation Bodywaves as part of the Color of the Year exhibition.

UICA teamed up with Grand Rapids-based X-Rite Pantone to present Color of the Year, an exhibition of original artworks that utilize the PANTONE® Color of the Year 2016, PANTONE 13-1520 Rose Quartz and PANTONE 15-3919 Serenity, as a point of departure and as a major component of execution. The show explores the influence that fine art has on color use in the realms of fashion, interiors, and industrial design. Color of the Year leads viewers on a journey from inspiration to realization with work by local, national, and international artists.
