“My Story Through Art” is designed to allow youth at risk and/or in foster care to retain a sense of their past, to describe their present situation or to take a look into their future through the utilization of a self-expressive and creative art experience. This six week project pairs a local Grand Rapids area artist with a youth and their mentor to cohesively produce a piece of art that allows the youth to tell a story of their culture, their family, their history or their hopes and dreams.
The emphasis of this project is to allow these youth to not only express themselves, but to learn about their identity. The life of a youth at risk and in foster care involved at a minimum a sense of loss, trauma, and an immense amount of inconsistency. Youth are often left with stress, depression and confusion, and sometimes are not able to express who they are, what they identify with or where they are going in life. “My Story Through Art” will allow youth to continue the healing process through an authentic, self expressive art project all while learning a new art form. This event is sponsored by Bethany Christian Services with support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids.
