On Saturday, Oct. 12, Grand Rapidians will gather for a campaign-free event where candidates running for mayor, the 3rd Ward and state representative races will be asked their stance on specific local issues.

Together West Michigan (TWM), a coalition of 18 local organizations focused on policy issues like childcare, housing, mental health and immigrant rights, will host the Candidates Accountability Forum from 10-11:30 a.m. at Oakdale Park Church.

Eleven candidates have already confirmed their attendance, including mayoral candidates David LaGrand and Senita Lenear, along with several others running for local and state offices.

During the event, each candidate will be asked a series of direct yes-or-no questions related to key local issues. They will have only one minute to elaborate on their answers.

The questions presented to candidates will focus on critical problems identified through hundreds of conversations with residents, particularly in the city’s 3rd Ward. Concerns such as childcare, speeding vehicles and the lack of recreational opportunities for youth during non-school hours have been top priorities.

The event is free, but attendees are being asked to register beforehand.
