The Kent County Parks Foundation and She Rides Her Own Way are partnering to host “Retro Beach Party” on Friday, June 23 from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. at the Millennium Park Beach. This event is a unique opportunity for adults to have their chance to enjoy a beautiful summer night - without the kids! An assortment of beachside activities will be available, and proceeds will help the Kent County Parks Foundation expand and enhance parks and trails.

The event will begin at the DeVos Family Boathouse, which hosts a fleet of paddle boats, row boats, and canoes usually for rent, but available to guests at no charge. Cocktails will begin at 7:00 p.m. on the viewing deck of the Boathouse before the event moves to the beach and splash pad for the program and entertainment.

A strolling dinner will be catered by Kitchen Sage, featuring a grab - and - go beach bucket picnic pail, allowing guests to dine wherever they choose. Kent County Parks Foundation Executive Director Kate Meyer stated, “Tommy and the team at Kitchen Sage are experts at creating culinary masterpieces that reflect the character of the event and encourage guests to play with their food and have fun!” Dessert will be a gourmet s’mores bar, where guests can choose their own toppings to garnish marshmallows dipped in a chocolate fountain.

The featured entertainment will be the Grand Rapids Soul Club, bringing their modern twist on vintage sounds. This group recently celebrated its fifth anniversary with a performance at the Pyramid Scheme on January 27. Guests to the Retro Beach Party are encouraged to dress up in any retro style they prefer, and all vintages are welcome!

Both nonprofits hosting the event, the Kent County Parks Foundation and She Rides Her Own way, encourage active lifestyles and environmental education. The Kent County Parks Foundation began in 1999 and their mission is to expand and improve Kent County’s 38 parks and trails as well as inspire the community to engage in preserving open spaces. Recently, they helped raise funds to renovate the Disc Golf Course at Johnson Park in preparation for the Professional Disc Golf Association Master Work Championships that will be held in Grand Rapids this summer.

She Rides Her Own Way began in 2014 as a campaign to bring health awareness and build self-esteem in women through biking. Now SRHOW is a full outdoor organization with three goals: help women develop self-esteem, encourage healthy lifestyles, and promote sustainable environmental education. "She Rides looks forward to supporting the future generations of Kent County park users and providing an enjoyable outdoor social experience with the Retro Beach Party Fundraiser," stated founder, Johannah Jelks.

Tickets for the event, once available, will be $75 and include a drink ticket, dinner, dessert, and unlimited access to the use of the paddle and row boats as well as other beachside activities. Please contact Kate Meyer at [email protected] for information about tickets, volunteering or sponsorship opportunities.
