Annual Spellebration

The Literacy Center of West Michigan hosts an annual spelling bee and awards ceremony called Spellebration.  This event keeps all the fun of the spelling bee and also recognizes the accomplishments of the students, tutors and community leaders who make our programs possible. Each team participating in the spelling bee is comprised of representatives from local companies.  The teams go head-to-head in a competition to win the trophy and bragging rights of being named the winners.

Lindsay McHolme and Bruce Bennett represented the Literacy Center in the annual spelling bee.

The Literacy Center of West Michigan recently welcomed Jennifer Kraai to the organization as the new Development Assistant and Event Planner.  Jennifer will assist the Development Director in fundraising initiatives and event planning.

“Having Jennifer join our team was a great decision for our Development department,” said Literacy Center of West Michigan Executive Director Susan K. Ledy. “With Jennifer’s experience in non profit fund development, we can continue to work towards achieving our fundraising goals and provide exceptional programs to the Grand Rapids community.”

Jennifer is a graduate of Grand Valley State University with a bachelor’s degree in public administration.  She is the former Executive Director of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, where she also served two 3 year terms on the foundation’s Board of Trustees.  Jennifer serves as an intervention volunteer at Springview Elementary School in Allendale, helping at-risk students improve their reading skills.

The Literacy Center’s Development department is responsible for the overall fund development and donor relations for the organization.  The department plans annual fundraising events, as well as, establishes and maintains current and prospective donor relationships.  Annual fundraising events include the Spellebration and Wine & Words.  To receive more information on donor events and sponsorship opportunities, please contact the Literacy Center at (616)459-5151.
