Dominican Center at Marywood Art Gallery will display the works of Joanne Peltz, Lucianne Siers, OP, and Jim VanBeek through February 28, 2012. Most of the works are available for purchase.
Joanne Peltz works in multimedia. Peltz is a visionary artist whose contribution to her world has been to reflect it, to distill its essence, to visualize its season, moods people and peculiarities. In her own way, she has expressed her vision of the world, her idea of the purpose of art and her belief of art’s value. Her business, Joanne & Company, markets products for the art industry. She serves as a consultant for corporate and private art investors. Joanne also enjoys teaching multimedia classes in her studio.
Lucianne Siers, OP is a member of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids. Art is a very important dimension in her life. She is a stone sculptor and finds carving stone is a way to express her thoughts, feelings and concerns about the world as well as in her personal life. Siers says, “As I have begun to look to the rock from which I am hewn, I invite you, the viewer, to walk with me into the feelings carved into stone which I have discovered and now share with you."
Jim VanBeek, a glass sculptor, has lived in West Michigan his entire life. After working in food service eighteen years for the Dominican Sisters and seven years for the Holy Cross Brothers, as well as owning and running his own restaurant, he is now retired and has more time for working with stained glass. VanBeek’s works have been displayed in various local art galleries and art shows, selling pieces in Saugatuck, Frankfort and Charlevoix.
VanBeek says, “My proudest achievement was the Christmas after 9/11. Michigan artists were invited to submit decorations for the National Christmas Tree which had been provided by the state of Michigan. I had the honor of having my piece being chosen for the tree. I had a vision of what I wanted the piece to represent, and that vision was of an Angel ascending to Heaven with the Twin Towers in her arms. A local television station asked if they could come out and film me in my studio and then they broadcast it on television.”

The Marywood Gallery is located in Dominican Center at Marywood . DCM is on the lower level of the main Marywood building at 2025 Fulton Street East. You can park for free in the large Marywood lot on the west side of Lakeside Drive, NE. The lot is about 1000 feet north of Fulton Street. While you are here, stop in at the DCM Bookstore and browse through our wide variety of books and gifts, which are appropriate for all life celebrations and occasions.
Sister Francetta McCann, OP, is the curator of the Marywood Art Gallery. She contacts selected artists and works with them to arrange the showing of work produced by Michigan artists. The show changes every two months, giving several local artists a venue to display and sell their artwork each year.
