Montreal musician Patrick Watson will be performing at the Ladies Literary Club on Thursday, November 29 at 8 p.m. Local folk/indie outfit The Crane Wives will be the opening band.
Watson, and bandmates Mishka Stein, Simon Angell and Robbie Kuster, form the eponymous band, and are on tour in support of their new album Adventures In Your Own Backyard, which was released in April of 2012 on Domino and Secret City Records.
Just prior to the release of the album, Watson and company had the opportunity perform as a headlining performance at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX.
Watson infuses his indie-folk stylings into his new album. In creating Adventures, Watson said he wanted to “make the kind of music [the band] would want to listen to at home.”
The theme of being at home, or being in your own backyard, coincides with the fact that Watson recorded the majority of Adventures in his apartment in Montreal, Canada.
Prior to recording Adventures, Watson and his bandmates toured and traveled the globe over a five year period, so perhaps the ‘home’ theme for the new album is a nod to the road-weary band.
Watson and his bandmates have also released Just another Ordinary Day (2003), Close to Paradise (2006) and Wooden Arms (2009). Close to Paradise garnered success in the form of the 2007 Polaris Music Prize, which is an annual award given to the best full-length Canadian album.
In addition to their headlining performance at SXSW, Watson and his bandmates performed for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert Series, and CBC Music.
Watson last performed in Grand Rapids in July while opening for Chicago-based musician Andrew Bird.
Local indie-folk outfit The Crane Wives will be opening for Watson in support of their album, The Fool in Her Wedding Gown, released in September of 2012.
The concert is brought to you by Calvin College’s Student Activities Office, and is $10.00 or $5.00 with a Calvin College ID.
