The Free Radical Event is quickly approaching. With October 22 right around the corner Grand Rapids is gearing up for another big night featuring art and local businesses. During the
Free Radical event, over 200 local artists will be showing in 40 spaces located in two Grand Rapids neighborhoods including Heartside and East Hills.
Some of the featured spaces in Heartside include:
44 Ionia, curated by Kendall College of Art and Designs’ MFA Club. In addition to 30 students the space will house a number of well known local artists such as Erwin Erkfitz, Joel Berry, Loralee Grace Carrel, and Jeff Vandenberg.
Live work spaces such as the Mustache Gallery are hosting 4 great artists including several small scale paintings and sculpture work by Melissa Sirk. In fact there will be 9 live/work spaces located in 62, 106, 120 and 235 S. Division hosting shows and artwork by artists who live along south Division not counting several Free Radical sites.
The former home of Scavenger Hunt at 117 S. Division is hosting artist collective Dinderbeck Studio. Members of this Westside studio collective will be displaying a collection of prints and drawings.
134 S. Division will host guest curator, Kendall graduate and DAAC member Hunter Bridwell. Unique in the broad scope of work being shown the 8 artists featured at 134 will be exhibiting oil paintings, sculpture and printmaking.
Many of the local businesses are hosting artist or special offers for the evening of the event. Vertigo will have extended hours as well as hosting local artist Andy Branch. You can plan on picking up a great taco bar or killer quesadillas at Pikositos, in addition to checking out new work by Hugo Caludin and Erick Pichardo.
If you’re in need of a refreshing beverage to start your night make sure to swing into Pub 43. They will be hosting artists Alynn Guerra of Red Hydrant Press, Bill Taylor, Sam Skinner and Dana Toader.
After visiting the Avenue for the Arts attendees are invited to jump on the Speria Bus or a Fed Cross Van and visit the additional 20 spaces in East Hills. Site:Lab is using the new home of LaFontsee Galleries and Underground Studio. Site:Lab is known all over the city for there space-specific exhibitions the most recent being Michigan-Land of Riches at the Grand Rapids Public Muesum. The Site:Lab event will have a slew of familiar local/regional artists as well as professors from colleges and universities all over the state.
Come out October 22 from 5-11pm to check out Free Radical Galleries. There will be things to do and see around every corner. Check out some great local art and live music during this fantastic fall event!
