The renowned European girls' choir, "Little Stars" ("ZVJEZDICE") will be visiting Grand Rapids during their USA tour this month. From Zagreb, Croatia, the choir will be presenting the sound and spirit of Europe through Christmas songs.
According to the
Little Stars’ website, Zvjezdice was “founded in 1985 and forms part of the Youth Music Centre in Zagreb. The members of the choir are all outstanding students of primary and secondary schools in Zagreb.”
The choir has received national and international awards including two awards for best performance at the International Choir Festival in Llangollen, North Wales (the International Musical Eisteddfod); outstanding performance awards at the Sligo Choir Festival, Ireland and Stavanger, Norway; and best performance of a contemporary composition at the International Youth Choir Festival Celje, Slovenia.
The main local performance of the “Little Stars “ will be on December 15, 2010 at 7:00pm at the
Basilica of St. Adalbert (
701 Fourth St., NW) The concert is open to the public and is free of charge.
The choir will also perform as guests at the Forest Hills Northern High School Choir’s “Winter Concert” on December 14, 2010 at 7.00pm.
“Little Stars” are being brought to Grand Rapids by the members of
AMAC Midwest, the alumni organization of Croatian Universities. According to organizational representatives, many alumni live in the local area and wanted to offer their contribution to the cultural scene in Grand Rapids.
Maestro Zdravko Sljivac, the founder of the choir, expressed his pleasure that the “Little Stars” could contribute to the development of cultural and social relations between the Republic of Croatia and the State of Michigan.
Reportedly during this visit to Michigan, the Counsel General of the Republic of Croatia, Ms Renee Pea based in Chicago, will visit Grand Rapids and together with a delegation of Croatian business leaders from Grand Rapids , will meet with Grand Rapids Mayor, George Heartwell.
