When people hear the word icon, they typically think of a person - one who has excelled in a particular field such as sports, politics or entertainment. An icon, in Christianity, is a religious work of art, usually a flat panel painting depicting a holy being or object.
Dominican Center at Marywood is offering you a rare opportunity to create your own Christian icon during a weeklong Icon Retreat , which will be facilitated by West Michigan Iconographer, Diane Hamel. Diane is a lifelong artist whose passion for icons is contagious! She teaches people of all ages about iconology and how to write icons through lectures, workshops, and icon retreats. Her icons have been exhibited around the country, and she has written icons for churches, private collections and other institutions.
During the weeklong retreat, Diane will help you find your divine eyes, to see through the holy eyes of the icon, deeper into the beauty that surrounds you. Diane will lead the group in creating the Jesus Christ - Blessed Silence icon, which was first painted by Mother Anastasia in the 15th century in a church in Moscow.Above is a reproduction of the icon, Jesus Christ - Blessed Silence. We will pray three times a day and spend time working on our own icon. Participants will take home a completed icon at the end of the week. Details are below.
