Over the last several weeks, smoke from the forest fires in the Canadian province of Quebec has travelled southwards and resulted in hazy skies and poor air quality in many northern/northeastern American cities. Photos taken in New York City earlier this month showed an orange (almost dystopian) sky, with much of the City's iconic skyline obscured by smoke.
Now, the smoke is being carried into the midwestern United States. On Tuesday, residents of Grand Rapids dealt with haziness, the smell of smoke, and a "very unhealthy" air quality level. Many midwestern cities (Chicago, Milwaukee, etc.) have been under air quality alerts since yesterday, some of which will continue into Thursday.
Yesterday morning, it was reported that Grand Rapids had the worst air quality in the United States.
In response to this, JustAir, The Community Collaboration on Climate Change (C4), Scales Consulting, and the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP will be hosting an Air Quality Workshop on Thursday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This event will take place at The 1503 on the City's southeast side and will offer attendees the opportunity to get information about seven air quality monitors that JustAir recently installed in the 49507 neighborhood.
According to JustAir's media advisory, "residents in the 49507 zip code have been dealing with poor air quality for decades due to pollution and environmental injustice." The purpose of this workshop is to educate the community and equip them with the tools they need to ensure the health and safety of themselves and their families.
Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP online. Dinner and childcare will be provided.
Another Air Quality Workshop was held earlier this year. A recap is available on JustAir's YouTube channel.
