The Avenue for the Arts presents the First Friday Gallery Hop on Friday April 4 from 6-9 p.m. This multi-venue, Friday night destination includes art exhibitions, sales on hand-made goods, drink specials and more. Park around the corner, peruse local artwork, pick up a new record, grab a drink and catch a movie. You can find in all on the Avenue during First Fridays!

Every venue has a visit-worthy sales, specials and artwork on view, but this month we're showcasing the Wake Up Weekend Exhibit at Calvin College's (106) Gallery. The compassion-minded curators behind such past Wake Up Weekend art events as "Named and Nameless" and "Kinship" present their latest consciousness-raising effort, "Putting It All Together."

Rooted in anthropological curiosity, this exhibit will interrogate our strained, often absurd relationship to other animals through an array of cultural artifacts and oddities. Objects on view will range from the cute to the grotesque, extracted from our everyday experience with art, advertising and design. Prepare to laugh and to cry, and above all to make connections between various visual outputs of prevailing ideological apparatuses. After checking in at (106) Gallery, head south to Have Company to meet their first Artist in Residence this spring season, Michael Grey Footwear! While gallery hopping, grab a drink ticket from a participating First Friday venue and head to Pub 43 for $1 off your first drink. And finally, catch an indie flick at the UICAMaladies plays at 5:30 p.m. and Hide Your Smiling Faces plays at 8 p.m.

First Fridays includes a wide variety of galleries, shops and other businesses including Parliament the Boutique, Vertigo Music and Craft House. A complete listing of venues and parking information can be found on our website, or join in on Facebook.

Can’t make it this week? Fear not, First Friday Gallery Hops take place every month with a rotating schedule of featured artists, events and specials.

Whether you’re having family night or hanging out with the gang, First Friday has something everyone will enjoy. Come relax, join in the excitement and see all that downtown Grand Rapids has to offer. As always, First Fridays is a free event. Come one, come all.

First Fridays and all Avenue for the Arts events are made possible through Dwelling Place. For more information regarding the event, please contact Amanda Carmer at 303-304-9320 or email Avenue for the Arts with the subject line "First Friday." You can also learn more about the event on Facebook.
