Grand Rapids area business advocate Local First is challenging folks to take their 10x10 challenge. The challenge involves budgeting $10 per week for local food for 10 weeks. The idea is to shift those funds from where one would normally spend elsewhere to the local economy. The challenge started in August as part of thier Eat Local challenge and goes through October.

Last year's 10x10 challenge saw 1,000 people take the pledge pumping some $100,000 dollors into the local economy. This year Local First plans to double that.

Individuals can get involved by taking the pledge here, then stay connected with other participants through social media websites like Facebook. Substitute a profile picture with the Local First 10x10 Challenge logo to show support.

The 10x10 challenge will end with Fork Fest, an evening of food, drink and live music by Hawks and Owls. Samples will be provided from over 40 local culinarians and products will be available to purchase as well. Romence Gardens is hosting the event on October 24 from 5-9 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person.
