Grand Rapids-based videographer Alyson Caillaud-Jones first got the idea for "Cactus" when she received a 50mm lens for her birthday.

“The camera has the ability to render a specific element (or object) in a shot clearly while the rest of the image is out of focus. I wanted to create a character so stuck in her own world that you could see that introversion represented visually with this creative tool.”

"Cactus" will have its world premiere at Wealthy Theatre’s Dirk Koning Micro Cinema on Saturday, November 9. Showtimes will be at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. with doors opening 15 minutes before for each screening. Additionally, due to the film’s buzz, a third show has been created to meet demand. The third showing will begin at 9:45 p.m. on the dot and will be first come, first served.

Admission is free, but spots are few. The 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. shows are already filled up. Additional information may be found the Grand Rapids Community Media Center’s website here.

The debut film follows the story of a quiet, shy girl who is forced out of her comfort zone one day when her neighbor asks her last minute to take care of a cactus for a week while she is away.

“The girl feels threatened by the cactus, which has invaded her space,” says Caillaud-Jones, “but is also very curious towards it. Given such a, by her standards, large responsibility, she doesn’t let the plant out of her sight. She grows more comfortable with it and a connection begins to form, but she knows it must be returned at the end of the week.”

This is thoroughly a Michigan-based production, with an all-local cast and crew who worked on a shoot that took place entirely in Grand Rapids. The film showcases three cast members, all amateur actors and friends of the filmmakers: Amber Sackett (the lead), Annette Witte and Andrew Possehl. In addition the cast are three crew members: Alyson Caillaud-Jones, Dave Leins and Brenton Leasure. The cast and crew bios can be found on the press kit page of the film Tumblr.
