UICA's 23rd Annual Holiday Artists' Market is right around the corner and we asked a few of the artists some questions about their products for the market. Below Hyun Yoo answered our questions.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I‘m an industrial designer currently at Steelcase, where I work in teams to develop innovative office and healthcare solutions. I’m also nurturing my one-(wo)man company, OOM, designing and producing limited-edition ceramic objects. I love making things with my hands! I’m inspired by other artists’ and designers’ skills and talents and find the process of mastering a craft to be very rewarding.
What kind of products will you be selling at Holiday Artists’ Market?
Small-to-medium-sized ceramic ware. They can be functional, but could also be a quiet statement piece for the modern home. I call them tabletop sculptures!
What is your process for creating these products?
OOM is my outlet for the shapes that float in my head until I give them meaning. I strive to create simple, clean, functional and poetic objects. I typically start with a tightly-controlled design, but as the shape starts to take form I’m open to changes as the process of creation can take me to places I did not intend. Many times it is the "mistakes" that inspire my next set of work. I also enjoy exploring and accentuating the qualities of the material that I find most beautiful. In many of my current pieces I really enjoy the smooth, raw feeling of unglazed stoneware, but am also in love with the depth of glossy glazes.
Hyun’s ceramic items will be available for sale at UICA's Holiday Artists' Market on December 2, from 5–9 PM, and December 3, from 10 AM–9 PM.
