The day starts at the CMC Education Annex, 1110 Wealthy St. SE, where you may choose from two hands-on workshops:
1. Animators Workshop I: Women of Animated Film is an under-the-camera, hands-on workshop led by Charles Wilson. It’s a chance to actually experience three animation techniques created and popularized by women: silhouette animation, paint-on-glass, and sand animation -- and you’ll learn a little about the women who pioneered them.
2. Animators Workshop II: Animated Adventure led by Gary Schwartz. Gary is known the world over for his on Stop-Motion Adventures. Using the space, neighborhood and local environments you’ll create an animation portrait of Wealthy Theatre neighborhood. He is amazing!
Workshop sign-up begins at 8:30 a.m. on July 8th and workshops start at 9:00 a.m. You’ll work until noon then have a two-hour lunch break (lunch is not provided), then finish animations from 2:00-3:00 p.m.
From 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. it’s time for ASIFA The Inner Workings and Processes where animators will answer questions about what ASIFA is and what they are doing around the world. ASIFA members will also be sharing their processes and techniques during an animators show and tell.
Dinner is from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. with an Animator's Picnic/Potluck (rain or shine). We are setting up the up to grill hotdogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers. Please RSVP so we know how many burgers and hotdogs we will need to purchase and please bring a dish to share. Of course, we’ll also provide the classic ASIFA Cake. You’ll want to hear that story!
8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. is the West Michigan Premier of Sita Sings the Blues, directed, produced and animated by American artist Nina Paley. It intersperses events from the Hindu poem, Ramayana using a variety of animation styles and a musical score featuring blues singer, Annette Hanshaw.
