On November 4th, FOX-17 selected Deb Pena as the Teacher of the Week. Mrs. Pena is a first grade teacher at Burton Elementary who has been with the school for 17 years.
As a bi-lingual teacher in both English and Spanish, Mrs. Pena teaches students in their native Spanish for the first part of the year but then transitions her class to reading, writing, and speaking English. By the end of the year, Mrs. Pena’s students are fluent in both languages, something Pena takes great pride in. Burton Principal, Ana Aleman-Putman says that being bi-lingual and being able to teach in both languages is one of Mrs. Pena’s “special powers”, but that her greatest power is her dedication and love for the families at Burton.
In recognition of her achievement, Mrs. Pena was presented with a special certificate from FOX-17 along with a $25 gift card to Meijer.
