In this week’s segment of GRTV’s NPO Showcase, Nathan Slauer, VISTA Leader at Bethany Christian Services, discusses the current refugee crisis, the refugee resettlement efforts of the organization, and how folks in the community can get involved to help.
A refugee is anyone who is fleeing their country of origin due to a well-founded fear of persecution. This could be due to oppression, war, or a natural disaster. Refugees face a number of challenges, including a long waiting period to enter the United States, lack of food and water in camps, and getting housing, employment, and medical care once they’ve entered the country. Bethany Christian Services helps refugees adjust to their new country by helping them find housing, helping them prepare for and find employment, and providing ESL (English as a Second Language) and cultural competency classes.
Slauer is a part of the AmeriCorps VISTA program, a national service program that places individuals in nonprofits, schools, and government agencies do work in health, economic development, and education. Individuals serve for 10-12 months, and assist with developing sustainable practices to help their organization thrive into the future.
