Wealthy Theatre has partnered with LaughFest since the comedy festival’s first year, hosting national headliners - and presenting original, local events.

This week Wealthy Theatre presents two homegrown events, with a focus on experimentation and diversity: “WST3K” (3/13) and “OUR DIVERSITY SHOW!” (3/15).

“Gilda's LaughFest, which was created by Gilda's Club of Grand Rapids, embraces these opportunities to present regional comics in original ways,” says Wealthy Theatre Director Erin Wilson. “With their support, we’ve been able to present traditional African dance classes, and listening parties that revisit classic recordings by Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory and Rudy Ray Moore.”

“WST3K” (Thursday, 8 p.m.) pits several of the area’s best improv comics against a “classically bad” movie. Fans of the television show “Mystery Science Theater 3000” may recognize a not-so-subtle nod to the cult television show in the Wealthy Street Theatre's March 13 comedy event, WST3K presents "Black Fist."

Several of the area's best improv comics will overdub this classicly bad movie, live in the main theatre. The movie “Black Fist” will play on the big screen as the comics overdub the dialog, live in front of an actual audience.

“WST3K” begins at 8 p.m. in the Wealthy Theatre’s Peter Wege Auditorium. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door or online.

“OUR DIVERSITY SHOW!” is a live standup show featuring an intentionally diverse lineup of regional comics. Click here for the trailer.

“Standup performances in comedy clubs tend to be largely one race or another, rarely mixed,” Wilson says. “We wanted to do the opposite, to go against the grain and be intentional about diversity, and have fun with it.

“LaughFest loved the idea, so we ran with it, and ticket sales are going great.”

Performers include: Marc Yaffee, Jan Griffith, Jacob Guajardo, DK Hamilton, Sarah Jean Anderson, Joe Anderson, Dave Jones and Ben Wilke.
