Thinking about the rugby in Italy next year

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

If you are a fan of rugby, you may already be looking forward to one of the biggest events of 2015: the Six Nations. This historic tournament is an annual treat for rugby fans, and now is the perfect time to start planning your trip to watch a match.

If you want to combine the rugby with a holiday, why not consider Italy?

Watching the Six Nations in Italy

The Six Nations is played in all of the participating countries, including:

  • England;
  • Scotland;
  • Wales;
  • Ireland;
  • Italy;
  • France.

There will be three matches played in Italy, when Italy will take on Ireland, France and Wales at home. The dates for the matches are:

  • Ireland on February 7th;
  • France on March 15th;
  • Wales on March 21st.

The games will take place over a period of about six weeks, so you could aim to time your holiday to coincide with one of the games. Alternatively, you could try to catch the two games in March, which are only a week apart.

Rome is the setting for the rugby

Even better, the rugby matches will all be played in none other than Rome, the exciting capital city of Italy. They will take place at the Stadio Olimpico, which has a 70,000 capacity, and the atmosphere will be electric – not just inside the stadium but all over the city.

Getting to the matches

If you decide to see a match or two, you will need to plan your trip carefully. The first thing you will want to do is buy your tickets and ensure you can see the matches, and you could do this in various ways.

But don't forget that there are more convenient ways if you want to book a holiday in addition to your tickets. For example, if you want to see the Italy v Ireland rugby match or any of the other matches, there are specialist agencies that may be able to arrange not only your tickets but your holiday in Italy as well.

Mixing sport and travel

Rome is one of the great cities of the world, and you may well want to spend some time exploring its highlights, including:

  • the Roman Forum;
  • the Colosseum;
  • St Peter's Basilica;
  • the Trevi Fountain;
  • the Vatican Museums.

However, just because the rugby is in Rome, this does not mean you have to stay in the city during your entire holiday. Italy is a fairly small country, so you can easily travel to one of the other towns, cities or regions to enjoy a multi-centre holiday. It just depends where takes your fancy. For example, you could head to:

  • Tuscany and Florence;
  • The Amalfi Coast;
  • Venice;
  • Milan;
  • Lazio;
  • Umbria.

That's just a start though. There are so many places to go in Italy, and you could even combine it with a trip to Sicily or Sardinia.

Visit Italy, watch rugby, have a great holiday

Italy is an amazing country to visit for a holiday at any time of year. But the fact that the rugby will be showing in Rome in 2015 is just another great reason to plan a holiday here. So start planning your trip, think of some of the places you could visit, and have a great time.
