Reading and Playing with the Stars

Contact:

Pitch:

The local youth of Grand Rapids have come together to read with the children and connect. The youth consist of various communities of the area like the Women’s Basketball team of Davenport, the local college communities like the Davenport University. Reading with the Stars is not only a program to bring communities together it strengthens the ties between one another. Books are not the only media that is used. Several toys that are fun and educational are also used in the process.

Reading is without a doubt an important element in the life of an individual and starting this habit from a young age is the key. Reading to children creates an emotional tie and makes the process memorable. It gives children an insight and provides knowledge. For this reason Reading with the Stars was initiated.

Where children books are not yet optimal as a media for communicating with the children, toys are used instead. Plush toys, building blocks and game sets are media that is used to be with the children. The program was inspired by a similar program in Michigan. However, Reading with the Stars had a strong focus not only on the children but also on the volunteers.
