The West Michigan New Horizons Music Ensembles provides music-making opportunities for adults, including basic band and orchestra programs. Our "Red Band" performs concert band literature in settings such as senior residences and the Salvation Army senior neighbors luncheons.
It's especially fun to bring music to youngsters in an elementary school.
The students will get to participate in "conducting" the band, playing percussion instruments, and an introduction to music theory. We'll demonstrate the various families of instruments and provide some fun facts...how long would a French horn be if it was unwound? what's the lowest note the tuba can play?
In the photo, director Nancy Summers is leading her volunteer guest directors as the band plays John Philip Sousa's march "The Gallant Seventh."
