The book The Moral Ground addresses the question of whether human beings have a moral or ethical responsibility to preserve the future earth. With the diverse population of Grand Rapids the views on this subject will vary greatly.
Jim, 50 years old, works to for the water maintenance department at the City of Kentwood. He also holds a degree in horticulture, is very interested in the political arena of Grand Rapids and the country.
Initially difficult for Jim to put into words what exactly he was trying to say he replied we can always talk about what needs to be done but unless we put it into practice it is nothing but lip service. Jim states it is difficult to change our mindset because we need to think past the narrow mindedness of the short time we and our children spend on this planet.
Jim answers the “Moral Ground” question with an emphatic yes, we are here but a short time and it is our responsibility to leave the planet as we were left it with several improvements. The earth is just as much a living being as we human beings are and it is our responsibility to take care of both.
Jim the father of two children believes education for preserving the planet and themselves begins at home. Taking care of the planet according to Jim goes back to those simple rules learned in Kindergarten. Do unto other (and other things) as you would have done unto yourself. What you have used put back and turns off what you’ve turned on.
He also believes in what Jimmy Carter implemented during his presidency. Lowering the speed limit to 55, slowing before stop lights, lowering your thermostat, using public transportation and riding your bike whenever possible, also taking advantage of the current tax credits for improving energy efficiency in the house would save us much energy preservation for the future of our planet and future generations.
Jim believes there is a positive change toward preserving our planet. More people are becoming aware of the problems we are facing and are taking steps in the right direction. According to Jim there is no denying we have to do something and the time is now.
