Internships Available
The Rapidian is always looking for a few good interns. What we can't pay you in financial benefit, we make up for in college credit, an impressive addition to your resume, and a nice little portfolio of writing samples to show off.
The next available internship opportunities will correspond with the Fall 2012 semesters. All internships are open to anyone, not just college students.

Innovation Community Reporting Intern:
Reports to: Holly Bechiri, Managing Editor
Position type: Unpaid, can be done for college credit
Duration: 4-6 months, dependent upon hours available per week
Hours: 8-15 hours per week, flexible dependent upon availability
The Rapidian is seeking an innovation community reporting intern that will build relationships with local innovation and entrepreneurial hubs to build up our Innovation Spotlight section. The intern will be responsible for reaching out to local businesses and innovation hubs, as well as creating engaging and useful content about what it takes to be an innovator in the West Michigan area. Applicants with a keen interest in finding out not only what is happening now but learning about the history of innovation in the area and who was behind the story are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:
- A good eye for local businesses, entrepreneurs, and innovators that have the potential to have a story built around their success within the community
- Strong writing abilities
- Familiarity with Associated Press Style
- Patient, inquisitive, and strong communication skills
- Commit to a minimum of two articles per month

Beat Intern
Reports to: Holly Bechiri, Managing Editor
Position type: Unpaid, can be done for college credit
Duration: 4-6 months minimum
Hours: 8-15 hours per week, dependent upon availability
The Rapidian is seeking a beat intern to build a core community of citizen journalists reporting on content from one specific area of interest. The intern will identify interested reporters, encouraging, inspiring and working with them on articles. The intern will also be creating content him/herself that is geared towards the specific subject matter. Currently, The Rapidian is in need of starting a local art beat and a spirituality beat, as well as rebuilding our current food beat for the summer/fall. We are also open to interns suggesting and creating other beats, if public interest and year-round content can be proven. Applicants interested as much in building a community as they are in building content are encouraged to apply.

Advertising and Marketing Intern
Reports to: Andy Dragt, Business Development
Position type: Unpaid, can be done for college credit
Duration: 4-6 months minimum
Hours: 8-15 hours per week, depending upon availability
The Rapidian is seeking an advertising and marketing intern to develop relationships with businesses who have an interest in advertising with The Rapidian. This intern will be responsible for checking in with existing advertisers, empowering business owners by training them on the use of the Rapidian website, offering design and marketing advice and continuing communication with advertisers while identifying other potential business partners. More responsibilities may be given as they suit the needs of the intern.
Qualifications:
- Strong sales and advertising abilities
- Understanding of appropriate sales tactics and target audiences
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently

Content Intern
Reports to: Holly Bechiri, Managing Editor
Position type: Unpaid internship; can be done for college credit
Duration: 6 months
Hours: 10-15 hours per week
The Rapidian is seeking a content intern with a strong interest in reporting. The content intern will cover assigned news stories, immediately publishable, and create evergreen pieces to be published at The Rapidian’s discretion.
Qualifications
- Strong writing abilities
- Familiarity with Associated Press style
- Good eye for identifying stories and recognizing multiple facets and angles of each story
- Inquisitive and curious about surroundings
- Prior familiarity with Rapidian platform desired but not required

Bilingual (Spanish & English) Intern
Reports to: Holly Bechiri, Managing Editor & Chelsea LaForge, Community Engagement Specialist
Position type: Unpaid, can be done for college credit
Duration: 4-6 months minimum
Hours: 8-15 hours per week, dependent upon availability
The Rapidian is seeking a bilingual intern that can demonstrate strong speaking, writing, and listening skills in both Spanish and English. This intern will be responsible for creating educational tools for our Spanish-speaking readership and potential reporters. Along with creating these tools, this intern will be expected to present the information in front of groups while working with those groups to best understand how to use The Rapidian. It is also expected that this intern have the ability to translate articles from English to Spanish in written form, without compromising the meaning of each reporter's work.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in grammar for both English and Spanish
- Translation ability for both Spanish to English and English to Spanish
- Strong ability to interpret and interact through oral and written communications
- Familiarity with The Rapidian process for becoming a reporting and creating content
- A desire to educate others to become active in the Rapidian community, regardless of language barriers
