In this week’s segment of GRTV’s NPO Showcase, Laura Oesch, Lead Resident Services Specialist from the Grand Rapids Housing Commission, discusses how they assist low-income individuals and families obtain housing and become self-sufficient.

The GRHC currently operates nearly 4,000 public housing units for homeless, senior-citizens, disabled and lower-income families. Their Hope Community rapid re-housing program pairs homeless mothers and their children with a place to live while linking participants with health care, child care, job training programs and transportation to help them achieve economic self-sufficiency.

The GRHC helps residents obtain Section 8 housing assistance and will connect them with property owners who will accept subsidized housing vouchers. Resources are available for property owners considering working with GRHC to provide housing for lower-income families. For residents who have received housing assistance from GRHC and are interested in purchasing their own home, the organization offers the Section 8 Homeownership Program.

For community members hoping to get involved, GRHC has a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals with different talents including clerical, transportation, childcare, home repair, and art workshops. GRHC is also accepting donation of items on the Hope Community Wishlist.

NPO Showcase is just one of the many ways that the Community Media Center serves the nonprofit community.
