St. Andrew's School
302 Sheldon Blvd. SE
Grand Rapids MI 49503
After 137 years in downtown Grand Rapids, St. Andrew’s School, 302 Sheldon Blvd. SE, will be closing in June due to declining enrollment. But before that happens, the school has organized an event on Saturday, April 24 designed to celebrate all St. Andrew’s has accomplished since its founding in 1873.
Former students, staff, and all whose lives have been connected to St. Andrew’s are invited to come and walk the hallways one last time before the school closes. It will be a time of reunion, of gratitude for all the school has done, and of honoring the teachers, administrators, and staff who devoted their talents to St. Andrew’s over the years.
Events start at 3 p.m., when guests will gather on the piazza outside school for an opening ceremony. Then the school doors will open for a dessert reception and bidding on silent auction items that will continue until 6:45 p.m. A preview of some of the items up for bid, along with more information about the day’s events, is available at www.celebratingalegacy.blogspot.com and www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=110059199014087.
Also taking place that afternoon will be a presentation of the Hugh Michael Beahan Foundation’s annual Faith in Humanity Award to the school. The foundation, created nearly 30 years ago in honor of Monsignor Hugh Michael Beahan, funds scholarships for children who would like to attend St. Andrew’s School but can’t afford the cost. The foundation has raised more than $1million over the years, allowing thousands of children to receive a quality education and also ensuring that the student body at St. Andrew’s would be a diverse mix of children from all races, religions, and family backgrounds.
Although the school won’t be open next year, proceeds from the auction will still be helping children. The community’s generosity at the auction will support the students of St. Andrew’s School as they complete this school year, and will help ensure that the work of the foundation will go on even after the doors of St. Andrew’s have closed.
