Carolina Chocolate Drops

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

Ladies Literary Club

61 Sheldon Blvd
Grand Rapids MI 49503

Sitting at the feet of Joe Thompson, a fiddle player who some consider to be “one of the most historically important American traditional performers active today,” Carolina Chocolate Drops has learned the distinctive style of Piedmont string-band music. The irony of three talented, young, black artist choosing traditional orold time style music, a genre dominated by old white men, is not lost on Dom Flemons, Justin Robinson and Rhiannon Giddens. Their band name, as well as the title of the soon to be released album, Genuine Negro Jig, are wonderful tongue-in-cheek moves that recognize and celebrate the irony they are living.
