The Literacy Center of West Michigan will be hosting “Books for Bedtime”, a book drive to benefit families in the Literacy Center’s Family Literacy Program.  “Books for Bedtime” will run September 20-October 11 with the support of Macatawa Bank. The goal of the book drive is to collect 2,000 new or gently used children’s books to provide each family in the program with one book per month for the program year.  A kickoff celebration will be held September 20 at the Literacy Center from 6:00-8:00pm.

To track the progress of the book drive, donors are asked to register the number of books that they will be donating at www.booksforbedtime.eventbrite.com.  Book donations can be dropped off at any Macatawa Bank branch in Kent County.

“The purpose of the book drive is to help our Family Literacy Program participants build their home libraries.  Many of our adult learners are enrolled in the program to set an example for their children and reinforce the importance of reading.  Parental involvement is vital to the academic success of a child.  We want to make sure that their children will not have to go to bed without a book read to them each night by their parent,” said Susan Ledy, Executive Director of the Literacy Center of West Michigan.

According to the National Coalition for Literacy, children’s literacy levels are directly linked to their parent’s literacy levels.
